The HER2/neu oncogene encodes a 185-kDa transmembrane protein with homology to the epidermal growth factor receptor. HER2 is overexpressed in 30-40% of breast and ovarian cancers, and this overexpression was shown to correlate with aggressiveness of malignancy and poor prognosis.
