Beta-MSH (melanocyte-stimulating hormone) is produced as a precursor by the pituitary gland. Beta-MSH increases the pigmentation of skin by increasing melanin production in melanocytes. Beta-MSH corresponds to aa 217-234 of corticotropin precursor (pro-opiomelanocortin, POMC).
